A reporter, Donald Hirsch, states that Poverty statistics show that children from poor homes are up to nine months behind their peers before they event get to school. In a lot of urban areas this unfortunate statistic is true. In many cases the parent can’t afford or refuse to pay for a higher education; leaving their children behind with a young and most likely inexperienced teacher who just graduated from college. The government claims that it is working to improve opportunities for children from poor families. Truly the public school system only cares about how high the test scores are so the school does not lose money or get shut down. Paulo Freire would agree to this statement if I were to ask him a question today about “Do you think that the teaching styles of the public school system are flawed”. He would say how there from of teaching does not allow for the students to think out of the box. He would state how the students are treated like robots or lab rats the way that they are treated and tested. Poverty that is left over in some families from one generation to the next is heavily influence by education, or the lack of it. The status of the children, obviously but unfortunately plays a huge part in the ability they have for getting an education.
